Meet Dr. Melanie Pugh, DMD, D. ABDSM

DMD, D. ABDSM | Private Practice Owner | Clinical Voice of Pugh Leadership Academy | 30+ Years in Dentistry

I’ve worked in public health clinics, corporate dental chains, insurance practices, and fee-for-service practices. None of them were my Dream Practice. Until I built one.

Melanie Pugh graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1994. What followed was one of the most varied careers in dentistry you’ll find – not by accident, but because she was genuinely searching for a place where dentistry felt the way she’d always hoped it would.

In her first decade, she treated patients in an Appalachian clinic and an inner-city public health setting. She held contracts with a nursing home and Head Start. She owned her own practice, hired an associate, and eventually sold it. She worked at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. Then she and Jody moved to Florida in 2003 – and she kept searching.

Corporate dental. Insurance-based private practice. Fee-for-service private practice. She tried it all. And in every single one of those environments, something was missing. The chaos never went away. The stress never went away. The feeling that the practice was running her – instead of the other way around – never went away.

“I wish someone has told me what it takes to build the practice I have now – without having to learn it all the hard way.”

Int he mid-2020s, Melanie and Jody sat down and made a commitment. No more playing practice. No more hoping things would get better on their own. They were going to build something real – a Dream Practice, designed from the ground up to give Melanie her joy back.

Today, Melanie Pugh DMD PA is fee-for-service and completely out of network with insurance. There are multiple associate doctors. The team has been together for years – and they function like a family. Patients don’t just like the practice – they’re loyal to it. Specialists who visit say it’s their favorite practice to work with.

The chaotic days are gone. What replaced them is a well-oiled practice that transforms lives – and rarely disappoints.

The Practice That Built PLA

Melanie’s practice isn’t just a dental office – it’s the laboratory where every framework, every system, and every principle taught at Pugh Leadership Academy was built and tested.

When Jody teaches about Human First culture, he’s teaching what Melanie lives every day. When PLA talks about what a Dream Practice looks and feels like – Melanie’s practice is the proof.

She is PLA’s most important case study. Not because she’s perfect – but because she started exactly where most practice owners are right now, works through every version of this industry, and same out the other side with something worth teaching.

“My team is like my family to me. We get to transform lives in a well-oiled system that rarely disappoints. That’s the Dream Practice.”

Hometown Values. Clinical Excellence. No Shortcuts.

At the heart of Melanie’s approach to dentistry are honesty, trustworthiness, and hometown values. She grew up in Frenchburg, Kentucky – and that upbringing never left her.

What patients remark on the most is her gentleness, her patience, and the fact that they never feel rushed. She treats every patient the way she’s want her own family to be treated. That’s not a marketing line – it’s how she was raised.

Her clinical experience spans some of the most complex and diverse dentistry you’ll find in private practice – from complex oral surgery to sleep apnea treatment, from inner-city public health to high-level cosmetic and restorative care.

She completed the Mastery I Program with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and has trained at the world-renowned Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education.

Why Melanie Matters to PLA

Melanie is the clinical voice of Pugh Leadership Academy. She brings something no outside consultant can bring – 30 years of living it, in every corner of this industry.

She speaks alongside Jody on keynotes and seminars, particularly on the topics of fee-for-service practice, patient experience, and what it actually takes to build a team that stays. When she speaks, she speaks from experience – not theory.

She doesn’t run PLA. That’s Jody’s lane. But without Melanie – without her practice, her journey, and her willingness to be honest about how hard the road was — there is no PLA.

If Melanie’s story sounds familiar – you’re exactly who PLA was built for.

You don’t have to spend 30 years figuring out what works. You don’t have to try every version of dentistry before you find the one that gives you your life back.

That’s exactly what Pugh Leadership Academy exists to help you do faster.
